When India shot its first US film, they turned to the veteran actress Gilly.
“Please”, they begged, “show us how to cry on command”.
Gilly took one look at the Director and said, "imagine you have a poopy
diaper. Now, imagine someone won’t stop taking pictures of you.”
People say that tears were rolling down the man’s cheeks and he simply
said, “you are a genius, you and your blanket.”
She was hailed after a groundbreaking performance in Pagliacci (Clowns).
Audiences from Cleveland to Naperville were moved by the critically
acclaimed "best frowny face, ever"...
The most successful look of Gilly’s career came during the shooting of the new
Alka Seltzer ad. A fight broke out between the director and script writer. The
script writer wanted someone to look indigested but in a noble, fearful, happy,
sad, melancholy, jubilant, mopey, depressed, ecstatic, joyful, nervous, itchy,
comfortable sort of way. No matter how many adjectives the Director pleaded
with the writer to remove, he was stalwart.
Finally, fearing the brand would be tarnished by the petty dispute, Gilly quietly
approached the two and asked, “do you mean a look like this?”
Both men are said to have quit their jobs that day simply saying,
“the world can never be more moved, our work is unnecessary.”
